Ourika Valley Day Trip from Marrakech
A full-day Ourika Valley & Oukaimeden Plateau day trip from Marrakech: fantastic High Atlas scenery, Berber villages, remote valleys & a short guided hike.
Marrakech – Aghbalou – Setti Fadma – Chiqr – Touichtt – Hadd n’Azegaour – Marrakech
Departure from Marrakech around 8.30 in the morning for a 2.5-hour drive south to one of Morocco’s most beautiful places – the Ourika Valley. Some 33km from Marrakech, this valley really starts at Dar Caid Ouriki, with its ruined, caidal kasbah and mosque. On reaching the village of Tiguemi n’Oumzilet, drive on up through hills amid olive groves to visit the ochre-red village of Akhlij, then on to the hamlet of Asouqane and a stop at Aghbalou, set amongst terraced fields seeming to hang from the slopes. From here, carry on almost to the end of the valley until you reach the riverside hamlet of Setti Fadma, famed for its nearby waterfalls and ancient walnut trees set amidst a backdrop of three sides of the magnificent High Atlas peaks of some 3500m.
Here, leave the vehicle to start a 5-6 hour private, guided circle hike towards the west across the river, setting out from Agadir n’Ait Boulmane (1509m) and then towards the north up along a narrow winding path towards the Berber hamlet of Chiqr (1900m), on through the col of the Tizi n’Ougadil n’Boulmane (2200m) with the Jbel Oukaimeden range before you. From here, circle down to Imi n’Taddert and on up through the valley to the village of Tourichtt, where your guide will prepare a field picnic beside a delightful waterfall; an opportunity, perhaps, to get refreshed.
After lunch the afternoon 2-hour hike is made by setting out down alongside small waterfalls and stark slopes to Amlougghi, to arrive eventually at the village of Ait Barqa where you will cross the river to rejoin your vehicle at Hadd n’Azegaour at around 5 pm for your return to Marrakech, where you should arrive back at around 7 in the evening.

Nine of my grandchildren plus their partners (all in their 20’s) plus 3 other family members.
We were met on time by our fantastic driver Ibrahim who stayed with us all week. Our vehicle was a brand new Mercedes mini-bus. We also had different guides to some of the more historic places. Our travels took us from Marrakech to The Atlas Mountains, Sahara desert, Casablanca, Fez and Essaouira. We have unforgettable memories of camel riding into the sunset and dancing to Berber musicians infront of a fire pit late into the night.
The accomodation was outstanding in old, picturesque Riads everywhere (except luxury tents .with proper bathrooms . in the desert).
I cannot recommend this company too highly. We received exactly what was promised and they were always flexible if we needed to make a change.
Ofcourse, it’s helpful to have words of warning. There were some very long days of driving as we covered a lot of territory. This is not a choice for the less fit. Lots of steep stairs, not always with hand rails. . But I am 84 and I made it.
Also, don’t travel with checked in luggage. You don’t need many clothes and it’s easier to carry small cases.
