Your Day from Tangier
You’re met at the Port of Tangier and helped through customs, then it’s a short private drive into the city for a quick look at the Medina — the Grand Socco, the Mendoubia Gardens and its 800-year-old trees, the Sidi Bounabid Mosque, Kasbah Square, and the Tangier American Legation Museum — before heading inland.
The road crosses fertile plains and a narrow mountain pass to Tetouan, whose Berber name means “springs.” Here you’ll walk Hassan II Square, where the old and modern town meet, then step into Tetouan’s walled medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site lined with weavers, jewellers and leather workers still at their trade. A stop at the Museum of Moroccan Art (weather and day permitting — it’s closed Tuesdays) rounds out the visit, with a coffee break near Bab el Oukla or on arrival in Chefchaouen.
From Tetouan, the drive climbs into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, founded in 1415 and known the world over for its blue-washed walls and cobalt doorways — a tradition said to date back to the town’s Jewish community and their Andalusian roots. Your guide leads a walking tour through the medina: the Palace El Makhzen, the wide square of Outa el Hammam, a tangle of alleyways and painted doorways, and the ochre kasbah walls. It’s also one of the best places in Morocco to shop for handmade goods — leather babouches, woven Berber blankets, cedar woodwork, and hand-painted pigments in the same blues used on the walls outside.
Late in the afternoon, you head back down out of the mountains to Tangier and your waiting ship.
