Your Day in Tangier
On arrival at the Port of Tangier, you’re met and helped through customs, then picked up in a private air-conditioned vehicle to start the tour.
First stop is the Medina, which is honestly not a place you want to try navigating on your own with a ship departure time looming. Your guide walks you through the Grand Socco market square, past a few traditional tea houses, the Mendoubia Gardens (home to trees close to 800 years old), the Sidi Bounabid Mosque, Kasbah Square, the old Méchouar audience square, the Moulay Ismaïl Mosque, the Merinid College, and what used to be the Jewish quarter, once known as Synagogues Street. You’ll also stop at the Tangier American Legation Museum — the first property the U.S. government ever owned overseas, and the only U.S. National Historic Landmark located outside the country.
From there, the drive heads out of the city past the Governor’s Residence and the King’s summer palace, climbing through pine and cork-oak forest to Cape Spartel — the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, generally considered the most north-westerly tip of Africa. The 1864 lighthouse and the ocean view make it a natural stop to get out and stretch.
Next is the Caves of Hercules: sea caves that flood at high tide, part natural and part carved out long ago, tied by local legend to Hercules resting here after his Twelve Labours.
On the way back into town, there’s a stop for refreshments at the Hotel El Minzah, then some free time to wander the souks before heading back to your ship.
