Agadir was almost entirely rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, so its history lives less in old buildings and more in the hills above the city and the market stalls below. This short excursion, timed to a half-day port call, takes in the ruined kasbah overlooking the bay, the Souq Al Had, and free time at the beach or in Agadir’s recreated old medina.

Your Day in Agadir
We start with the drive up to Agadir’s Kasbah, a hilltop fortress built in the 16th century and largely destroyed in the earthquake that leveled the city in 1960. Little remains of its rammed-earth walls today, but the climb, about 216 meters above the port, rewards you with the best view in Agadir: the commercial and fishing ports below, nine kilometers of sandy beach, the city’s main avenues, and on a clear day the Anti-Atlas mountains and the High Atlas beyond.
From the Kasbah we head down into Souq Al Had, Agadir’s main market, busy every day but Monday. Under its rows of shaded stalls you’ll find spices, leather babouches, kaftans, baskets and belts, and boxes carved from local thuya wood — worth a browse even if you’re not buying.
Depending on how the morning has gone, we’ll either head to the beach for a walk, or a swim if you’ve brought a costume, or continue on to Agadir’s New Medina — a modern recreation of a traditional walled medina, built around a hammam, a small hotel, cafés, and workshops where you can watch artisans working in wood, forged iron, mosaic and pottery — before returning you to the port.
